Maple Leaves

Context

A maple leaf device is worn on the undress ribbons to denote the level of membership in the Order of Canada, the additional award of a decoration, the award or a theatre bar or to denote a second or subsequent bar to a general service award.

Eligibility and criteria

A silver maple leaf device is worn on undress ribbons to denote:

  • The level of Member of the Order of Canada;
  • Each additional award of the Meritorious Service Cross, Medal of Bravery, Meritorious Service Medal;
  • A second award of the Sacrifice Medal;
  • Service during the offensive operations during the Gulf War (Gulf & Kuwait Medal);
  • A first rotation bar to the South-West Asia Service Medal, General Campaign Star, General Service Medal and the Operational Service Medal; and
  • A second bar to the Special Service Medal.

A gold maple leaf device is worn on undress ribbons to denote:

  • The level of Officer of the Order of Canada;
  • Each additional award of the Star of Military Valour;
  • Each additional award of the Star of Courage; 
  • Each additional award of the Medal of Military Valour;
  • A third award of the Sacrifice Medal;
  • A second rotation bar to the South-West Asia Service Medal, General Campaign Star, General Service Medal and the Operational Service Medal; and
  • A third bar to the Special Service Medal.

A red maple leaf device is worn on undress ribbons to denote:

  • The level of Companion of the Order of Canada; 
  • Fourth award of the Sacrifice Medal;
  • A third rotation bar to the South-West Asia Service Medal, General Campaign Star, General Service Medal and the Operational Service Medal; 
  • A fourth or subsequent bar to the Special Service Medal; and
  • Each bar to the Exemplary Service Medals. 

Description

The Maple Leafs are available in silver, gold or enamelled red with gold edges.

Wearing

When wearing one maple leaf device it shall be worn centered on the undress ribbon.

If more than three Rotation Bars have been awarded, the maple leaves shall be worn in combination so as to indicate the total number of Rotation Bars awarded.

When multiple ribbon devices are worn on the undress ribbon, they shall be spaced evenly on the ribbon. The devices are worn in precedence, from left to right in the following sequence:

  • Mention in Dispatches insignia;
  • Shield device (SWASM only);
  • Red maple leaf;
  • Gold maple leaf; and
  • Silver maple leaf.
