The official description, eligibility, criteria, and history of the UN Observation Mission in El Salvador (ONUSAL).

UN Observation Mission in El Salvador (ONUSAL)

Context

This Mission was established on 20 May 1991 to monitor all agreements between the Government of El Salvador and Frente Farabundo Marti para la Liberacion Nacional (FMLN). This Mission was subsequently expanded in January 1992 to assume the verification of all aspects of the cease-fire, the separation of forces, and the agreement on the National Civil Police, which saw ONUSAL monitoring the maintenance of public order during the transitional period while a new National Civil Police was set up.

Eligibility and criteria

Award for 90 days consecutive service between 20 May 1991 to 30 April 1995.

The UN strictly applies their medals policy and will not consider requests for initial issue of the UN medals that are submitted more than one year after repatriation from the mission area.

The qualifying service is not required for members killed or presumed killed while on assignment. In such cases, the medal may be awarded posthumously.
