Flood Relief

Operation Lentus

We're supporting our provincial, local and volunteer partners to help with relief efforts. Since 20 April, 2019 soldiers, sailors and aviators have been:

  • filling and moving sandbags
  • providing assistance to citizens
  • conducting wellness checks
  • clearing routes
  • assisting with the evacuations of persons
  • supporting efforts to protect property from flooding

Operation LENTUS is the Canadian Armed Forces response to natural disasters in Canada.

Operation Lentus

British Columbia Wildfires 2018

From August 13 to September 13, 2018, the Canadian Armed Forces helped the Province of British Columbia to respond to wildfires.

Approximately 420 CAF members, including the land and air task forces, headquarters, and support personnel.

On the land

220 soldiers

  • Spent over 22,000 hours supporting firefighting efforts
  • Mopped up over 1000 hectares of land

On the air side

51 airwomen and airmen

  • 1 CC-130J Hercules
  • 1 CH-124 Sea King
  • 1 CH-146 Griffon
  • Transported over 105,000 pounds of equipment
  • And 115 people, including firefighters.

Operation Lentus

British Columbia Floods 2018

From May 16 to 26, 2018, the Canadian Armed Forces supported the Province of British Columbia's response to flooding

  • West Kelowna

Over 350 troops

  • Filled 50,000 sandbags and put 80,500 in place
  • Installed 750 metres of aqua dams
  • and 50 metres of protective Hesco barrier
  • Reinforced and constructed dykes

2018 New Brunswick floods

From May 11 to 15, 2018, the Canadian Armed Forces supported the Province of New Brunswick in its response to flooding<./p>

63 CAF members were deployed in the region

10 Critical infrastructure Assessment Teams helped the province to assess damage and infrastructure:

  • 350 kilometres of transport routes
  • 130 damaged areas
  • 2 bridges

Operation Lentus

Wildfires in western Canada

from July to September 2017, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) supported British Columbia and Manitoba in managing their wildfire situations.

British Columbia

Length: 10 weeks

Tasks:

  • Support firefighting operations
  • Evacuate residents
  • Transport first responders and supplies
  • Deliver aid to isolated communities
  • Support RCMP in information the public and observing and reporting at posts along roads

17-03 Flood Relief

The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) helped with flood relief in a number of Quebec regions, with resources from the Royal Canadian Navy, the Canadian Army, and the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Operation Lentus 17-01

Approximately 200 CAF members were deployed to support the emergency response to the ice storm in New Brunswick.

  • Acadian Peninsula

CAF personnel and assets conducted a variety of tasks, including:

  • delivering emergency supplies, including water and fuel
  • assisting in re-establishing existing road networks
  • supporting door-to-door residential wellbeing checks in the Northeast of the province
  • conducting a CP-140 Aurora overflight to determine the extent of damage to infrastructure
  • utilising a CH-146 Griffon for air transport

Delivered 34 truckloads of firewood

Conducted 5,400 house visits

More than 11,000 km of roads surveyed

Delivered 8 pallets of water
