INÉDI announces the implementation of a virtual prototyping room, the only one of its kind in Quebec

Terrebonne, May 18, 2017 – INÉDI, the college centre for technology transfer (CCTT) in industrial design at the Cégep régional de Lanaudière, today announced the implementation of a virtual prototyping room, the only one of its kind in Quebec. The room will be set up in the college’s Terrebonne campus and will feature leading-edge virtual imaging technology.

Industrial design: a creative activity

Industrial design has changed a lot in the past 20 years. With globalization, designers need a competitive edge in the global market, and an excellent way to achieve this is through creativity. INÉDI’s virtual prototyping room gives users access to technology that will help them improve product development and make it more efficient. Through its mission of furthering industrial design, INÉDI is once again at the forefront of the industry. “With its virtual prototyping room, INÉDI is providing tangible support for designers who want to remain at the vanguard of creativity. Quebec’s manufacturing and industrial sector will benefit from this room, which features advanced technology,” stated Sylvain Poirier, Director of INÉDI.

A unique, accessible room

In concrete terms, the room will provide an immersive environment, offering users a chance to have an experience that blurs the line between what is real and what is virtual. “Quebec designer offices, enterprises, colleges and universities, researchers, the other CCTTs and many more users can access these leading-edge technologies. Creativity and user proficiency with the technology are the only limits to the projects that will be carried out virtually,” added INÉDI Director Sylvain Poirier. With a total estimated cost of over $421,000, the project is made possible by a $305,000 non-repayable contribution from CED under the Quebec Economic Development Program. The contribution will go toward acquiring equipment and making the required leasehold improvements.

ABOUT INÉDI

INÉDI wants to advance industrial design and its use in Quebec enterprises and other CCTTs through technology transfers stemming from applied research mandates and projects. INÉDI focuses its expertise on three main research streams:

• Posture, mobility, independence and performance

• Connected objects and virtuality

• Co-design and design thinking

Since its creation in 2010, the CCTT has delivered some 20 research projects and approximately 100 interventions with businesses.

INÉDI’s professional designers work closely with the Industrial Design Techniques program at the Cégep régional de Lanaudière (Terrebonne campus) and promote student participation in the CCTT’s research and mandates. Interns are coached and benefit from concrete experience that will give them a competitive edge when they enter the labour market.
