Announcement of government support for setting up a business and congress centre in Thetford Mines
News Release
Thetford Mines, August 25, 2017 — The governments of Canada and Quebec recognize the importance of good municipal infrastructure. Thanks to investments by these two levels of government, Thetford Mines will benefit from a business and congress centre that will improve services to residents, respond to community demands and provide much-needed space.
The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Canada’s Minister of International Development and La Francophonie and Member of Parliament for Compton–Stanstead, along with Laurent Lessard, Quebec’s Minister of Transport, Sustainable Mobility and Transport Electrification, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, and Member for Lotbinière–Frontenac, today announced that the governments of Canada and Quebec are investing $5.25 million and $2.8 million, respectively, in this project. The City of Thetford Mines will be contributing more than $800,000, for a total combined investment of close to $9 million.
The project involves the construction of a business and congress centre of more than 2,000 square metres. It will be added on to an existing complex that contains a hotel and commercial space, resulting in an inclusive recreation and tourism facility.

Quick Facts
-
Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED) is providing a non-repayable financial contribution of $5.25 million for the construction of a business and congress centre that will stimulate business tourism in the Thetford Mines region. The investment is being made through CED’s Canadian Initiative for the Economic Diversification of Communities Reliant on Chrysotile, an initiative that supports projects aimed at diversifying economic activities in the Des Appalaches and Des Sources RCMs.
CED is one of six regional development agencies that fall under the responsibility of the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, the Honourable Navdeep Bains.
In 2010, the Government of Quebec committed to investing in this project. Funding was increased to account for changes to the future building’s architectural design. The contribution of $2,789,047 is being made through the Québec-Municipalities Infrastructure Program (PIQM).
The 2017–2027 Québec Infrastructure Plan sets out investments of $7 billion in the municipal infrastructure sector, which falls under the responsibility of the ministère des Affaires municipales et de l’Occupation du territoire [department of municipal affairs and land occupancy]. Adding the contributions of the Government of Canada and municipalities to this amount brings the total to be invested in municipal infrastructure in Quebec over the next 10 years to $15 billion.
