Backgrounder: Montérégie families to enjoy improved community spaces for a better quality of life

August 22, 2017 – Saint-Zotique, Quebec – Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED)

Montérégie families will enjoy improved recreational spaces and modern community facilities thanks to the Government of Canada’s $694,199 investment, in the form of non-repayable contributions. The funding will generate some $1.5 million in related investments from other partners, such as non-profit organizations and municipalities.

Acting on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for CED, Peter Schiefke, Member of Parliament for Vaudreuil–Soulanges and Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister (Youth), made the announcement today.

The financial assistance has been awarded through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP150).

Société Vélo Berge Inc.

Non-repayable contribution of $477,250 out of a total investment of $1,035,700

The project involves major repairs to a portion of the bike path in the Parc régional de Beauharnois-Salaberry. CED’s assistance will go toward repairing the bedding, repaving the surface, reinforcing the shoulder, and upgrading the street furniture and signage on more than 10 km of the regional park’s bike path.

Société Vélo Berge Inc. is mandated to prepare the design and development plan for the Parc régional de Beauharnois-Salaberry, more specifically, the network of bike paths, and to ensure its enhancement and sustainability. This is key recreational and tourism infrastructure. The regional park is 70 km long and features many stops and a variety of facilities, such as  boat launch ramps and a space for recreational vehicles.

Plage St-Zotique Inc. (in French only)

Non-repayable contribution of $100,000 out of a total investment of $220,000

The purpose of the project is to improve Saint-Zotique beach’s playground by installing a splash pad that uses recirculated water. CED’s contribution will go toward the acquisition of aquatic components, the water recirculation system and the concrete slab, as well as plumbing and electrical work.

Plage St-Zotique Inc. is a non-profit organization and has been responsible for organizing sports and recreational activities on the beach for the entire community since its opening in 1982.

Hemmingford Recreation Centre

 

Non-repayable contribution of $66,949 out of a total investment of $133,897

The purpose of the project is to upgrade a play area by installing splash park modules. The work includes developing the splash park system (aquatic components, concrete slabs, plumbing and electrical work). CED’s contribution will go toward project costs.

The organization is mandated to promote the park and its attractions, including a playground. It manages the organization of events like the winter carnival, along with regular activities such as hockey tournaments.

Piste cyclable Soulanges

 

Non-repayable contribution of $50,000 out of a total investment of $100,000

The project involves repairs to the Soulanges bike path. It consists in resurfacing parts of the bike path to make it safe for users. CED’s contribution will be used to prepare the plans and specifications, pave the surface, supervise the work site and cover laboratory costs.

Piste cyclable Soulanges (PCS) has been around since 1993, the year the bike path was built, and is mandated to develop, maintain and operate it. The paved bike path is 35 km long and goes through six municipalities along the river, all of which are members of the non-profit organization: Rivière-Beaudette, Saint-Zotique, Les Coteaux, Coteau-du-Lac, Les Cèdres and Pointe-des-Cascades.
