Kinova® can increase production capacity by acquiring robotic manufacturing equipment

News Release

By investing in the production capacity of enterprises, the Government of Canada is standing by its commitments and helping businesses expand, innovate and export their products to create high-quality jobs and ensure the prosperity of our national and regional economies.

Linda Lapointe, Member of Parliament for Rivière-des-Mille-Îles, acting on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for CED, announced that Kinova® Inc. has been granted $500,000 in financial assistance, in the form of a repayable contribution, to acquire equipment as part of the manufacturing plant’s move.

Kinova® Inc. is a business that designs and manufactures lightweight, compact, multi-faceted solutions that foster human-robot interaction. The company operates in three markets: assistive robotics, which give humans with reduced mobility more independence; innovative robotics, which drives academic research; and medical robotics, which helps health professionals treat their patients more efficiently.

The funding awarded through CED’s Quebec Economic Development Program (QEDP) will help Kinova acquire a 3D coordinate measuring machine, calibration video cameras and characterization equipment to improve the quality of its robotic arms, meet medical standards and expand its product line.

“The Government of Canada is committed to helping Canadian businesses that build on innovation. As a true economic driver, innovation is the key to success because it generates growth that benefits enterprises and communities. Kinova® is the perfect example of a growing innovative business. It won the Governor General’s Innovation Award in 2016, the only enterprise among the six winners.”

The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister responsible for CED

“Kinova® is determined to play a leading role in innovative robotics while pursuing its quest for acceptance of these new technologies in more conservative medical robotics markets. We firmly believe that our technology and expertise can help improve patient care. We therefore plan to set up partnerships with hospitals, governments and other industry players so that our products can contribute to patient recovery and independence. CED’s support in achieving this goal is very valuable.”
