A new Chibougamau Eenou Friendship Centre
News Release
Chibougamau, QC - October 25, 2017 – Today marked the official visit to the construction site of the new building that will house the Chibougamau Eenou Friendship Centre (CEFC). The Government of Quebec has granted $600,000 in financial assistance for this project, valued at almost $2.7 million, under the Aboriginal Initiatives Fund III. Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED) has awarded a non-repayable contribution of $500,000 through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP150).
This initiative will provide Chibougamau’s Indigenous community members with a place where they can get together and connect with the non-Indigenous population. Incidentally, access to the new building will help the Friendship Centre’s team improve living conditions for Indigenous people living in or visiting Chibougamau.
Quotes
“This new beginning will help bring together the region’s Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, which is a priority for the Government of Quebec. In the Policy on Quebec Affirmation and Canadian Relations – Quebecers: Our Way of Being Canadian, we clearly underscore the contribution of Indigenous peoples to the development of Quebec’s identity, and their place in Quebec’s history. This project highlights the importance of harmonizing our relations based on reciprocal respect and co-operation.”
Philippe Couillard, Premier of Quebec
“The new building will allow the Chibougamau Eenou Friendship Centre to pursue its mission, thereby improving living conditions for members of the First Nations by providing them with numerous support and coaching programs designed specifically for them. The plans for the new infrastructure were drawn up with the Centre’s community vocation, and Aboriginal culture, in mind.”
Geoffrey Kelley, Minister responsible for Native Affairs
“There’s no better way to mark Canada’s 150th anniversary than to celebrate the places that bring us together—the places that allow us to stay fit, unwind and connect with our friends and neighbours. That’s why we support projects like this one by the Chibougamau Eenou Friendship Centre, which mobilize and unite Canada’s Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.”
The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister responsible for CED
“As the first ever Aboriginal friendship centre in Quebec, the Chibougamau Eenou Friendship Centre is part of the history of this town—of the province even. I hope the new building will once again allow the Centre to make a name for itself as a meeting place for sharing and discussion among Indigenous people living in or visiting Chibougamau.”
Luc Blanchette, Minister of Forests, Wildlife and Parks, and Minister responsible for the Nord-du-Québec region
“We hope that the construction of this new building will contribute to the well-being of the community, and that it will facilitate the work of Jo-Ann Toulouse’s dedicated team. Not only will it result in a reduction in maintenance costs and provide an opportunity to generate new revenue that will allow the Centre to improve its services, but it will also provide access to a healthy, safe and more suitable workplace.”
Jean Boucher, MNA for Ungava and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Forests, Wildlife and Parks
