Backrounder - Government of Canada supports expansion projects of four Coaticook businesses

Backgrounder

April 11, 2018 – Coaticook, Quebec – Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED)

Businesses need to be able to rely on adequate resources to create and commercialize innovative products. The Government of Canada has adopted an ambitious plan to support entrepreneurial vitality through concrete initiatives generating growth that benefits businesses and communities.

The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Member of Parliament for Compton–Stanstead and Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, acting on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for CED, announced that Atelier M.G., Microbrasserie Coaticook, Meubles Gober and Bio-Bon are sharing a total of $410,890 in financial assistance.

The funding has been granted through the Quebec Economic Development Program.

Atelier M.G.

Repayable contribution of $148,123 out of a total investment of $424,123

The project consisted in improving the business’s productivity by optimizing its machining processes. CED’s contribution went toward the acquisition of a SWISS numerical control lathe (highly specialized equipment) and the fit-up work required to install it.

Founded in 1998, Atelier M.G. (9081-8014 Québec Inc.) specializes in conventional and digital machining of small aluminum, stainless steel and ferrous and non-ferrous metal parts. Its clientele is mostly made up of medium and large enterprises, mainly in the manufacturing, aeronautics and agricultural sectors. The company has 10 employees and expects to create one job with this project.

Microbrasserie Coaticook

Repayable contribution of $142,500 out of a total investment of $352,500

The project consisted in enhancing the business’s performance by increasing its production capacity to meet the growing demand for its products. CED’s contribution went toward the expansion of the production area, the addition of a cold room and the acquisition of fermenters.

Microbrasserie Coaticook (9266-4523 Québec Inc.) launched its activities in 2013 with the opening of its restaurant and pub. Building on that success, it has since been offering a variety of bottled beer that is distributed in numerous service points, including convenience stores, specialty shops, restaurants and grocery stores, mostly in Estrie, as well as in the Montréal and Québec City areas. The company has 18 employees and around 28 employees in the summer. It created four jobs once the project was completed.

Meubles Gober

Repayable contribution of $91,017 out of a total investment of $243,017

The project helped the company increase its production capacity and launch its marketing strategy in the United States. CED’s contribution went toward the acquisition and installation of a numerical control machining centre and prospecting activities targeting the U.S. market.

Founded in 1988, Meubles Gober is an SME that offers a wide range of cabinet doors, mouldings and related products in a variety of wood species, as well as in synthetic material. Its exclusive custom products are mainly distributed in the Quebec and Canadian markets and partly in the United States. The company has 77 employees in the Coaticook RCM.

Bio-Bon

Repayable contribution of $29,250 out of a total investment of $66,250

The project involved the addition of a second kitchen to increase production to meet the growing demand for vegan and organic products. CED’s contribution went toward the acquisition of new equipment and the fit-up work required on the premises for its installation.

Founded in 2003, Bio-Bon Inc. got off to a good start. The business has two lines of vegan pâtés with or without gluten: the line that is certified “organic” by Ecocert Canada is destined for retail sales in specialty shops and supermarkets; the HRI line is sold to hotels, restaurant chains and institutions. The company now has 12 employees and was able to create four full-time jobs with this project.
