Governments of Quebec and Canada support an $87M investment project by Bel Canada

Mini Babybel® cheese production in Sorel-Tracy

Sorel-Tracy, Quebec, July 12, 2018 – The Government of Quebec and the Government of Canada have awarded $20 million and $2.7 million, respectively, to Bel Canada, as part of an $87 million construction project for a Mini Babybel® cheese production plant in Sorel-Tracy, in Montérégie. In all, 170 jobs will be created, around 80% of which will be in Sorel-Tracy and 20% in the company’s head office in Montréal.

Stéphane Billette, Minister for Small and Medium Enterprises, Regulatory Streamlining and Regional Economic Development, acting on behalf of Dominique Anglade, Deputy Premier, Minister of Economy, Science and Innovation and Minister responsible for the Digital Strategy, and Brenda Shanahan, Member of Parliament for Châteauguay–Lacolle, acting on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED), made the announcement today.

The government assistance is broken down as follows: the ministère de l’Économie, de la Science et de l’Innovation has granted a $15 million loan and a $5 million non-repayable contribution through the ESSOR program. CED has awarded a repayable contribution of $2.7 million through the Quebec Economic Development Program. These major investments will help the company build a state-of-the-art cheese production plant and acquire production equipment, as well as cover the project engineering costs.

  • Created in 2005, Bel Canada, a subsidiary of Groupe Bel, currently manufactures The Laughing Cow® cheese in Quebec, in partnership with Fromagerie Bergeron, and Boursin® cheese, in partnership with Agropur, for the Canadian market.

  • Established in Canada since 1957, Groupe Bel is a global leader in cheese brands and a key player in the healthy snack market. Its products are prepared at 32 production sites and distributed in some 130 countries.

  • The Sorel-Tracy plant will be the first Canadian establishment built and operated by Bel Canada. It will be located on land adjacent to Laiterie Chalifoux, a company founded in 1920 in Sorel-Tracy, with which it is expected to have industrial synergies.

  • The goal of the ESSOR program (website in French only) is to support investment projects in Quebec to enhance competitiveness and productivity, create jobs and ensure sustainable development.

  • CED is one of the six regional development agencies under the responsibility of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development.
