Backgrounder: details of contributions awarded for three Témiscamingue RCM projects

Backgrounder

May 23, 2019 – Ville-Marie, QuebecCanada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED)

LVL Global Inc., Barbe Broue Pub and the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue will be able to carry out their projects with a total of $1,337,000 in funding from Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions.

Stéphane Lauzon, Member of Parliament for Argenteuil–La Petite-Nation and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence announced the funding today. The funds provided by the Government of Canada will enable recipients to meet their objectives and generate total investments of nearly $5 million.

The funding is awarded under CED’s Quebec Economic Development Program and Women Entrepreneurship Strategy(SFE).

LVL Global Inc.

Repayable contribution of $1 million out of a total investment of $4 million

Founded in 2009, LVL Global manufactures laminated wood veneer components from aspen or a mix of aspen and birch. It exports part of its production and employs about 100 people, nearly half of them women, at its Ville-Marie plant.

The project aims to support the company’s growth by optimizing its production capacity through the implementation of a state-of-the-art automated manufacturing process. CED’s contribution will fund the acquisition of a rotary veneer system incorporating a laser scanner.

Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue

Non-repayable contribution of $237,500 out of a total investment of $780,727

The Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT), a member of the Université du Québec network, was created in 1983 to serve this territory and the Nord-du-Québec. In addition to its primary mission, it contributes to the advancement and transfer of knowledge by participating in development projects in its community. It has a number of research entities, including the Abitibi-Témiscamingue Agriculture Research Station in Notre-Dame-du-Nord, where the activities will take place.

The project aims to support innovation and technology transfer in the agri-food sector, particularly through deriving value from agri-food processing by-products in order to improve the competitiveness and environmental performance of enterprises in this sector. CED’s contribution will fund the acquisition of laboratory equipment, including an infrared analyzer, an inductively coupled plasma spectrometer and an organic elemental analyzer.

The project will create one job.

Barbe Broue Pub
(9196-0351 Québec inc.)

Non-repayable contribution of $100,000 out of a total investment of $125,000

Farm, pub and microbrewery, the company, whose majority shareholder is a woman, was founded in 2008 and is located in Nédélec. The microbrewery manufactures and markets original craft-type beers, finely brewed from local, Quebec and Canadian ingredients.

The project includes the acquisition of brewing equipment and software, the development of a website and the establishment of a retail space, training activities and consulting services.

The project will create four jobs.
