Québec and Ottawa support Solucan start-up in Trois-Rivières

News release

Trois-Rivières, Quebec, February 14, 2020 – To support the start-up of Solucan, a business that specializes in the digital printing of cans, the Government of Quebec is granting repayable financial support totalling $1,340,713 and the Government of Canada is providing a repayable contribution of $500,000. The project is evaluated at $4,094,891.

Member of the National Assembly for Trois-Rivières, Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Solidarity and Minister responsible for the Mauricie Region Jean Boulet, on behalf of Minister of Economy and Innovation and Minister responsible for the Lanaudière Region Pierre Fitzgibbon, along with Member of Parliament for Mount Royal and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour Anthony Housefather, on behalf of the Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages, the Honourable Mélanie Joly, made the announcement today.

Solucan has proceeded to acquire the necessary equipment to put into place a production line to print cans digitally. The business is initially targeting the Quebec microbrewery market and then the Canadian microbrewery market. It is also planning to offer to large breweries the possibility of printing promotional cans, for example, for festivals and events for which they are partners.

The Government of Quebec’s support can be broken down as follows: $785,713 from the Fonds de diversification économique du Centre-du-Québec et de la Mauricie, and $555,000 from Investissement Québec’s capital fund. The Government of Canada’s financial support is being granted through the Regional Economic Growth through Innovation program by Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED).

Quotes

“The Government of Quebec is pleased to support the start-up of a business evolving in a strategic, high-demand sector. With this investment, which will enable it to better meet the diverse needs of its clientele, Solucan will become a partner of choice for novel packaging solutions. This project has the potential to diversify the economy of the Mauricie Region and raise its profile across Quebec and elsewhere, thanks to the arrival of a dynamic, promising SME.”

Jean Boulet, Member of the National Assembly for Trois-Rivières, Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Solidarity and Minister responsible for the Mauricie Region

“Printed can manufacturers are currently found in the U.S. and print only very large quantities. This solution is not adapted to those Quebec microbreweries that produce small volumes. Solucan will thus enable Quebec microbreweries and craft brewers to market products that meet both consumer expectations and environmental standards.”

Pierre Fitzgibbon, Minister of Economy and Innovation and Minister responsible for the Lanaudière Region

“Solucan’s launch is very good news for the Mauricie Region. In addition to providing its clients with innovative, economical solutions that meet current recycling standards, the business will create quality jobs here in Trois-Rivières. I salute the work of Mr. Baril and his team!”

Anthony Housefather, Member of Parliament for Mount Royal and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour

“The Canadian craft beer industry is thriving, and Quebec brewers will benefit greatly from the innovative solutions Solucan will offer. We are committed to supporting homegrown entrepreneurs and encouraging them to set up shop, invest and market their products to ensure growth. Through the support announced today, the Government of Canada is demonstrating yet again how it is taking to heart the economic development of Quebec’s regions.”

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages and Minister responsible for CED

“Investissement Québec is here to support entrepreneurs who have ideas, who dare to begin, who innovate with solutions that are environmentally friendly and that meet current market needs. We are proud to accompany Solucan in its project to launch a new factory in Trois-Rivières, and we wish the business a brilliant future.”
