FedDev Ontario Supports Expansion Activities for Belleville Clean Technology Manufacturer

July 27, 2016 – Belleville, Ontario – Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario)
Today, Neil R. Ellis, Member of Parliament for Bay of Quinte, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for FedDev Ontario, announced an investment of up to $1.95 million to Strathcona Energy Group Inc. (SEG) to expand production capacity for its core solar panel business in Belleville.
Protecting the environment and growing the Canadian economy go hand in hand. That is why the Government of Canada is investing in SEG, a company that specializes in renewable energy solutions, including design, manufacturing and assembling services. Through this investment, SEG will be able to fit up its new Belleville headquarters and primary manufacturing site, expand its facility space by an additional 100,000 square feet, and purchase new technology. These efforts will allow the company to pursue trade opportunities through export markets and meet increased demand for its niche line of products.
This contribution will help SEG expand its production, testing, and research and development capabilities in order to increase the company's capacity to manufacture innovative solar panels. This project is expected to create up to 86 new full-time equivalent jobs in the clean energy sector in Belleville. The project will allow SEG to work collaboratively with local academic and regional development partners to support innovation and entrepreneurship in the Belleville area. The project will also serve to strengthen southern Ontario's renewable energy sector.

- The repayable contribution of up to $1.95 million, toward a total project cost of $7.8 million, is being provided through FedDev Ontario's Investing in Business Growth and Productivity initiative.
- Strathcona Energy Group (SEG) previously received a $500,000 repayable contribution from FedDev Ontario for product development through the Southern Ontario Fund for Investment in Innovation (SOFII). The company also received a total of $1.5 million for three projects from the Prince Edward-Lennox & Addington Community Futures Development Corporation, which received funding from FedDev Ontario.
- Established in 2009, SEG, and its subsidiaries relocated their global headquarters to Belleville in 2015, utilizing a 300,000 square foot plant of the former Nortel building. The company was recently honoured with the 2015 Urban Initiatives Award for its dedication to helping urban communities integrate sustainable technologies.
