Minister Chagger Sees How TritonWear Technology is Making a Splash

November 8, 2016 – Waterloo, ON – Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario)

The Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, Minister of Small Business and Tourism and Member of Parliament for Waterloo, the Honourable Bardish Chagger, today attended a demonstration of TritonWear technology – a wearable device that is making Canadian swimmers more competitive by providing state-of-the-art training data.

Canada is committed to being a nation that can compete in a digital world. By working with organizations like the Western Ontario Community Futures Development Corporation Association, the Government of Canada, through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), increases its ability to support small businesses like TritonWear Inc.

This was highlighted today when Minister Chagger went poolside at the University of Waterloo to watch former Waterloo Warrior, and TritonWear Inc.'s co-founder and CEO, Tristan Lehari lead a demonstration of this groundbreaking wearable performance tracking device. Also in attendance was David Penton, from the Western Ontario Community Futures Development Corporation Association; Jeff Slater, Head-coach of the Waterloo Warriors Varsity Swim Team, and members of the Waterloo Warriors Swim Team.

Benefitting from a $500,000 investment from the Southern Ontario Fund for Investment in Innovation (SOFII), TritonWear has developed a wearable device that competitive swimmers attach to their goggles. It measures numerous aspects of their performance regarding speed and stroke efficiency. Performance data is transmitted in real-time to a coach's tablet for every athlete in the pool simultaneously. By providing information in real-time and tracking valuable insights over time, this technology is improving the way that athletes train. With the future of sports becoming more data-driven, TritonWear's analytics are at the forefront of training technology.

While at the University of Waterloo, Minister Chagger also announced six other SOFII loans through the Western Ontario Community Futures Development Corporation Association. The list is available in the backgrounder.

Quick Facts

The Triton unit automatically calculates a dozen key performance metrics such as split times, stroke count, distance per stroke and sends that data in real-time to a coach's tablet.
Tristan Lehari was a competitive swimmer on the University of Waterloo's Varsity Swim Team, and served as the team's captain between 2009 and 2011.
The objective of SOFII is to provide highly-targeted support to innovative SMEs in rural and urban communities in southern Ontario, increasing competitiveness while stimulating the creation or preservation of high-value jobs.
The Western Ontario Community Futures Development Corporation (CFDC) Association, which is funded by FedDev Ontario, is a regional CFDC network for southwestern Ontario. The Association manages SOFII and supports the 20 CFDCs within its region. CFDCs have been helping owners of small- to medium-sized businesses for over 25 years with business financing and counselling.
