Summary of Overarching Public Comments received on the Draft Screening Assessment Reports and Risk Management Scope documents for Batch 7
Overarching comments on the draft screening assessment reports for Batch 7 to be addressed as part of the Chemicals Management Plan Challenge were provided by Chemical Sensitivities Manitoba and Canadian Environmental Law Association.
A summary of comments and responses is included below, organized by topic:
- Public Comment Period
| Topic | Comment | Response |
|---|---|---|
| Public Comment Period | The time allowed to the public to comment on the screening risk assessments documents is not sufficient and can lead to the impression of low concern regarding the findings of these assessments. Also, issues and gaps on the risk assessments that were identified in previous public comment submissions have not been substantially addressed through the current government approach. The lack of response to the on-going issues has resulted in very few regulatory actions aimed to eliminate chemicals of concern. | The Government of Canada works collaboratively with stakeholders such as the public, industry and health and environmental communities groups to ensure that the risks are clearly communicated and the regulatory decisions are understood. A 60-day public comment period is mandated under CEPA 1999 to provide stakeholders with an opportunity to submit comments on draft screening assessment reports, risk management scope and approach documents. All comments provided during the 60-day public comment period were taken into consideration. The public comment periods are also helpful in assisting the Government to develop strong and effective risk management actions. |
