Comments received on the draft screening assessment for certain direct and reactive dyes to be addressed as part of the Aromatic Azo based substance grouping of the Chemicals Management Plan (CMP) Substance Groupings Initiative.

Health assessment conclusions for the 61 azo direct dyes and the 8 azo reactive dyes are supported. In particular, that these dyes are not released to the environment in amounts that pose a danger to human and ecosystem health; and are not expected to bioaccumulate.

The partnership for sharing information between industry and the CMP program was viewed as positive throughout the CMP evaluation process for benzidine-based substances.

Industry support is being offered to find options for identifying and managing future risks related to changes in use and exposure - including the tracking of new international activities that could impact Canadians.

Stakeholders are encouraged to participate and provide feedback at all stages of the CMP process. A consultation document on potential options for information gathering or preventive actions will be available for stakeholder feedback after assessment of all substances in the Aromatic Azo and Benzidine-based Substance Grouping are completed.
