Raven Island National Wildlife Area pamphlet
What makes Raven Island NWA so special?
Raven Island National Wildlife Area (NWA) lies within the Lenore Lake Migratory Bird Sanctuary (MBS), approximately 140 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Established in 1982, the NWA enhances the value of the MBS by providing an undisturbed area of upland wildlife habitat, which is particularly important for migratory bird species during nesting, moulting and staging.
At 94 hectares in size, Raven Island NWA provides:
- a secure breeding area for migratory waterfowl such as ducks and Canada Geese, as well as smaller land birds;
- important nesting habitat in the low-lying grassland and mudflats for Marbled Godwits, American Avocets and other shorebirds;
- important staging habitat for a diversity of waterfowl, shorebirds, gulls, terns and herons, which use Lenore Lake during spring and fall migration.
What are Environment and Climate Change Canada Protected Areas?
Environment and Climate Change Canada establishes marine and terrestrial NWAs for the purposes of conservation, research and interpretation. NWAs are established to protect migratory birds, species at risk, and other wildlife and their habitats. NWAs are established under the authority of the Canada Wildlife Act and are, first and foremost, places for wildlife.
Migratory Bird Sanctuaries (MBSs) are established under the authority of the Migratory Birds Convention Act, 1994, and provide a refuge for migratory birds in marine and terrestrial environments. The current Protected Areas Network consists of 54 NWAs and 92 MBSs comprising more than 12 million hectares across Canada.
What can I do at Raven Island NWA?
To protect nesting birds, public access onto the island portion of the NWA, including hunting, swimming, camping or the use of on-road or off-road vehicles, is prohibited. Wildlife observation from boats or the adjacent mainland is encouraged. For a complete list of NWAs, including those you can visit, please see our website.
