FedNor Investments Support Business Development, Economic Growth, Community Infrastructure and Youth in Temiskaming Shores and Region

Northern Ontario Development Program (NODP)

FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program supports projects that promote sustainable community economic development, enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation throughout the region.

City of Temiskaming Shores – $1,000,000

A FedNor investment of $1 million will enable the City of Temiskaming Shores to improve existing infrastructure to support business growth and job creation. Specifically, the project will increase the water capacity to the city's prime business, industrial and commercial area, enabling the expansion of local businesses, including the local mall and Canadian Tire store, while creating new development opportunities. Once complete, this strategic initiative is expected to create more than 50 jobs.

Township of Harley – $270,000

An investment of $270,000 will enable the Township of Harley, in partnership with the Townships of Casey, Hudson and Kerns, to hire an economic development officer (EDO) for a three-year period. The EDO will help identify and develop initiatives aimed at diversifying the area's economy. Some key activities to be undertaken by the EDO include identifying business development opportunities and new industrial park tenants, growing the local agricultural industry, developing a tourism strategy, and other priority economic development projects in the region. This investment is provided through FedNor’s Community Investment Initiative for Northern Ontario (CIINO).

Northern Ontario Farm Innovation Alliance (NOFIA) – $67,455

With a FedNor contribution of $67,455, NOFIA will develop a dairy strategy for Northern Ontario. The goal of the project is to strengthen and enhance the value of the dairy processing system by identifying opportunities to expand business and develop new markets with a focus on maintaining and creating jobs. This initiative will benefit Northern Ontario’s 130 dairy producers and 10 dairy processors.

Timiskaming First Nation – $45,498

A FedNor investment of $45,498 will enable Timiskaming First Nation (TFN) to conduct an assessment of the economic value of non-timber forest products located on their traditional territory in Ontario.  TFN, in partnership with the Township of James/Elk Lake Community Forest, will work to identify priority species and conduct a comprehensive analysis of their economic potential, including new markets, job creation and tax revenues.

Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program  (CIP 150)

The Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program is part of the Government of Canada’s coordinated approach to mark the anniversary of Confederation. The program is designed to leave a lasting legacy in communities across the country by supporting improvements to community infrastructure that provide community and cultural benefits for the public.

Township of James – $80,345

A Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program investment of $80,345, through FedNor, will enable the Township of James to modernize its outdoor skating rink. Specifically, the funding will be used to rehabilitate the 50-year-old change room and utility building, as well as expand it to accommodate a gym facility for local residents. This modernization and expansion will enable residents of all ages to participate in a variety of recreational activities and be more healthy and active all year long.

Economic Development Initiative (EDI) Funding

FedNor’s Economic Development Initiative is part of the Government of Canada’s Roadmap for Canada’s Official Languages, which helps foster the development of new expertise in innovation, economic diversification and business growth in Northern Ontario’s Francophone communities, and supports economic opportunities made possible through linguistic duality.

ACFO-Témiskaming – $51,435

Provided through its Economic Development Initiative (EDI) for Northern Ontario, a FedNor investment of $51,435 will enable the Association canadienne-française de l’Ontario (ACFO), Temiskaming region, to hire a project coordinator to develop programming and lead efforts by Grade 7 and 8 students from four local schools on a variety of community initiatives. This project will enable participating youth to learn about project management, cooperative enterprises and other aspects of community development, helping to shape the region’s future leaders.
