Municipality of Wawa to benefit from key tourism infrastructure upgrades

News release

Government of Canada investment to help rejuvenate Wawa’s waterfront to boost economic growth

December 11, 2018 – Wawa, ON — Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario — FedNor

The residents and businesses of the Municipality of Wawa will benefit from enhancements to the waterfront area thanks to a Government of Canada investment of more than $723,500. This FedNor investment will enable the municipality to implement its Boreal Forest Eco-Walk and Waterfront Rejuvenation project to help increase local tourism and foster business opportunities and development along the beach and downtown areas.

The announcement was made today by the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for FedNor.

In line with the Municipality’s strategic plan, the investment will support the development of an ecological walking path along the Wawa Lake waterfront, including the construction of new docks, stairs, accessible public washrooms, beach house, outdoor furniture and storm water outfalls. The Boreal Forest-themed waterfront attraction will feature Indigenous artwork, sculptures and totem poles, and will also be linked to the Goose Nest, a new outdoor incubator space/vendors market on Broadway Avenue, the community’s main street. The new tourist attraction will be complemented by multilingual (English, Ojibway and French) way-finding signage, orientation maps, trail markers and banners.
