Strengthening tourism and economic development in West Nipissing

News release

Government of Canada invests $288,000 to accelerate growth and maximize tourism opportunities in Northern Ontario

August 15, 2019 – Verner, ON – Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario - FedNor

Tourism is an inclusive sector that showcases Canada’s culture, diversity, natural beauty and unique experiences to the world. It delivers economic benefits across the country by supporting one in ten jobs. That’s why the Government of Canada is investing in our tourism sector’s businesses and assets.

Today, Marc Serré, Member of Parliament for Nickel Belt, on behalf of the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Tourism, Official Languages and La Francophonie, announced funding of $225,000 to complete necessary infrastructure upgrades to the 1,000 acres of farmland required for Verner to host the 2019 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo (IPM). Specific infrastructure work includes new culverts and drainage systems, road enhancements, site improvements and fencing.

This investment is being made through the Canadian Experiences Fund (CEF), which supports Canadian businesses and organizations seeking to create, improve or enhance tourism products, facilities and experiences. FedNor is delivering CEF in Northern Ontario.

As part of the announcement, MP Serré celebrated an additional FedNor investment of $63,000 that enabled the Municipality of West Nipissing to hire a Marketing and Promotions Coordinator for a two-year period.

The Coordinator is leading promotional and communications activities related to IPM 2019, taking place in Verner - September 17-21, 2019.

This investment supports the $191,250 invested by FedNor in April 2018 which allowed the hiring of a project coordinator who planned all aspects of the event including recruiting an estimated 1000 volunteers along with implementing and hosting the event. This is the second time Northern Ontario plays host to the IPM. It is estimated that the event will attract more than 80,000 visitors to the Nickel Belt and Greater Sudbury region.
