Response to Auditor General of Canada’s Special Investigative Report on the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation

Statements

OTTAWA, ONTARIO – The Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, issued the following statement today:

I want to thank the Office of the Auditor General for their hard work and diligence on the Special Investigative Report on the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation (FFMC).  I have reviewed the report and agree with the recommendations.  Fisheries and Oceans Canada has been working closely with the board of directors of the FFMC to strengthen governance and provide interim direction as the organization addresses the issues identified in the report.

The FFMC provides important services to fishers ‎and communities, particularly in northern Manitoba and the Northwest Territories. Fisheries and Oceans Canada is engaging with affected stakeholders in order to make informed decisions related to the FFMC.  We take the concerns of fishers, including Indigenous fishers and communities, very seriously and their input will be considered in decisions regarding the future of the organization.
