News Release
November 24, 2015 - Ottawa, Ontario - Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada
The Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:
“It was with sadness that I learned of the passing of Kim Young-sam, former president of South Korea. On behalf of all Canadians, I offer my deepest condolences to President Kim’s family and the South Korean people. His historic contributions to South Korean democracy will always be remembered.
“The sugar maple tree that President Kim planted at Rideau Hall during a state visit to Canada in 1995 grew and thrived, as has the relationship between our two countries. Canada greatly values its enduring friendship with South Korea. We share with the South Korean people their loss of a great statesman.”
