Statement on release of Trans-Pacific Partnership text

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of International Trade, today issued the following statement:
“As you know, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) text was released today. Canada has always been a trading nation and today, trade is one of the ways we will work to strengthen the middle class.
“The Government of Canada strongly supports free trade, as this is how we will open markets to Canadian goods and services, grow Canadian businesses, create good-paying jobs, and provide choice and lower prices to Canadian consumers.
“The Government of Canada is also committed to being fully transparent, open and consultative. Our plan is to fully engage Canadians in the decision-making process, listen to what you have to say, and act on what we hear.
“As Minister of International Trade, I look forward to engaging with Canadians on the TPP Agreement. As well, our government is committed to holding a full and open public debate in Parliament to ensure Canadians are consulted on this historic trade agreement.
“As a first step in this process and as a matter of transparency, I invite Canadians to review the TPP text, which is now available through our website. We welcome any suggestions and ideas from all Canadians.”
