Minister Dion to visit Singapore

The Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that he will visit Singapore on April 8 and 9, 2016.
While in Singapore, Minister Dion will meet with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong; Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Foreign Affairs; and Masagos Zulkifli, Minister for Environment and Water Resources.
Minister Dion will discuss international and regional security, climate change, trade, investment and innovation and will explore areas in which Singapore and Canada could further deepen their cooperation.
During his visit, Minister Dion will also meet with leading figures from the Singaporean academic community to discuss regional economic, political and security developments.
Minister Dion will then travel to Japan to participate in the G7 Hiroshima Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on April 10 and 11.
Quick facts
- Canada and Singapore celebrated their 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations in December 2015 and enjoy excellent, wide-ranging bilateral relations based on shared values and common interests. Singapore is a member state of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, with which Canada will celebrate 40 years as a dialogue partner in 2017.
- In 2015, Canada’s bilateral merchandise trade with Singapore totalled $2.5 billion. In 2014, bilateral services trade with Singapore, a sophisticated business centre, totalled $2.78 billion.
- Singapore is the second-largest destination in Southeast Asia for Canadian foreign direct investment, and Singapore is Canada’s largest source of foreign direct investment from Southeast Asia.
- Canada and Singapore enjoy strong people-to-people links: there are about 6,000 Canadians and close to 16,000 Singaporean alumni of Canadian universities in the country, and 83,000 Canadians visit Singapore every year.
