Minister Dion to welcome Chilean counterpart

The Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that he will meet with Heraldo Muñoz, Chile’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, tomorrow in Ottawa.

Ministers Dion and Muñoz will discuss aspects of the long-standing, multi-faceted and fruitful collaboration between Canada and Chile, which is marked in particular this year by the 75th anniversary of Canada-Chile diplomatic relations. The ministers’ discussions will include the two countries’ joint interests in the Pacific Alliance, political developments in the hemisphere and bilateral cooperation in multilateral forums. 

The Canada-Chile relationship is continuously expanding and deepening. This year, the countries will focus on increasing their environmental collaboration to support their shared climate change commitments, including those in the Canada-Chile Agreement on Environmental Cooperation.

Canada and Chile are close partners in multilateral forums, including the UN, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, the World Trade Organization and the Organization of American States, as well as within the Summit of the Americas process.

  • The Canada-Chile Free Trade Agreement has been in force since 1997, making it Canada’s oldest free trade agreement with a South American partner. A modernization of this agreement is among the Minister of International Trade’s key priorities. 
  • Chile is the only country in the Americas with which Canada has a strategic partnership framework.
  • Canada is currently among the top foreign study destinations for Chilean post-secondary students, who may be supported by both Chilean and Canadian scholarship programs.
