Statement

June 23, 2016 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, today issued the following statement:

“Canada applauds today’s signature of a definitive ceasefire agreement between the Government of Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia [FARC], a major milestone on the path to a final peace accord.

“Canada congratulates both parties for their efforts to sustain progress in the peace negotiations based on the principles of justice, truth and reconciliation. The prospect of peace, and an end to this decades-long conflict in the Americas, is now closer than ever.

“As a long-standing partner of Colombia, Canada looks forward to doing what it can to support Colombia's efforts to build and implement a sustainable peace and long-lasting prosperity.

“Canada supports the mandate of the United Nations political mission, composed of unarmed international observers, which will monitor and verify the definitive ceasefire, cessation of hostilities and laying down of arms, as set out in the United Nations Security Council’s Resolution 2261, on January 25, 2016.”
