Canada very concerned with situation in Turkey

Statement

The Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today released the following statement regarding the situation in Turkey:

“Canada calls on all parties in Turkey to respect the country’s democratic institutions, remain calm and safeguard the security of civilians. Any factions attempting to use force to undermine Turkish democracy should stand down immediately and refrain from any acts of violence.

“Canada supports a democratic Turkey.

“Global Affairs Canada is closely monitoring the situation in Turkey.

“The Emergency Watch and Response Centre in Ottawa and Canadian offices in Ankara and Istanbul stand ready to provide consular assistance to Canadian citizens as required.

“Global Affairs Canada advises against all travel to Turkey. Canadians in Turkey should remain indoors, avoid large gatherings and follow the instructions of local authorities. Do not attempt to reach the Canadian embassy or consulate in person.”
