Canada condemns North Korean missile test

The Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:
“Canada unequivocally condemns today’s medium-range ballistic missile launches by North Korea in defiance of its international obligations and successive UN Security Council resolutions. We urge North Korea to cease such provocations immediately and comply with its international obligations.
“The targeting of an area located in Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone for the launch of this missile represents a further escalation of North Korea’s actions following a series of tests that together pose a grave threat to stability on the Korean Peninsula and to international peace and security.
“On March 2, 2016, Canada co-sponsored UN Security Council Resolution 2270 in response to previous nuclear and missile tests by North Korea. This resolution sent a clear message that the international community is resolved to halt North Korea’s reckless and illegitimate pursuit of nuclear weapon and ballistic missile capabilities.
“Canada supports international measures that would lead the North Korean regime to abandon its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. Canada encourages efforts to forge multilateral solutions that enhance security in the Asia-Pacific region.”
