Canada concerned by unrest in Gabon

Statement

September 2, 2016 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, today issued the following statement:

“Canada is deeply concerned by the current unrest in Gabon following the August 27 presidential election.

“We call on all parties to reject violence and for security forces to exercise restraint and respect the human rights of all Gabonese citizens.

“We also call on electoral authorities to issue results for each polling station, as recommended by the European Union electoral observation mission.

“This is the only way to reassure the population that the results truly reflect its will.”
