Projects in Cambodia and Vietnam

Backgrounder

Cambodia

Border security initiative

Up to $450,000 will be invested through Canada’s Counter-Terrorism Capacity Building Program (CTCBP) to the International Organization for Migration for a border security project in Cambodia over the next year. This investment will enhance the counter-terrorism and anti-crime effectiveness of Cambodia’s border security forces by increasing the analytical and operational capacity of its Tactical Intelligence Unit.

Vietnam

Climate change

The Innovation for Climate Change Fund is a $15-million project that aims to support Vietnamese small and medium-sized enterprises in implementing innovative initiatives sensitive to gender and climate change. Project activities include:

  1. providing grants for innovative business projects related to climate change;
  2. providing technical assistance and mentoring to selected enterprises; and
  3. supporting multi-party dialogue activities, such as forums, workshops, consultations, analytical studies and study tours in Canada.

Maritime security

The $2.5-million regional Strengthening Maritime Security project will focus on inter-agency collaboration and sharing of information and best practices to combat maritime terrorism. This project will be implemented by the CTCBP and carried out by INTERPOL.

Major events security

The CTCBP will invest up to $35,000 toward implementing the Major Events Security Framework Workshop in Vietnam. The Workshop aims to support Vietnam as it prepares to hold APEC-related meetings in the run-up to the November 2017 APEC Summit in Da Nang. The Workshop will present international standards and best practices in inter-agency collaboration for major event security planning.

Trade-related cooperation

Vietnam Airlines is equipped with a CAE simulator at its Ho Chi Minh City-based VNA Flight Training Centre that is used for pilots flying the Airbus A320. CAE announced a 10-year agreement to install three additional simulators at the Centre for pilots flying the Airbus A320 and A350 and the Boeing 787. This represents a significant new commercial partnership in pilot training between CAE and Vietnam Airlines.
