Canada deeply disappointed with Burundi's decision to withdraw from International Criminal Court
Statement
October 18, 2016 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada
The Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:
“Canada is deeply disappointed with the signing today by Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza of legislation to proceed with the country’s withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC).
“In a statement on October 12, I strongly encouraged Burundi to remain a member of the court and to renew its cooperation with the court. I repeat, again, my call on Burundi not to withdraw.
“Burundi’s decision, which could set in motion a process that would make it the first country to leave the court, will further marginalize it within the international community during a time when human rights violations in the country must be investigated and addressed.
“Canada continues to support all fair and independent judicial processes to ensure an end to impunity for serious human rights violations in Burundi.”
