Member of Parliament for Markham (subsequently Markham-Unionville, then Markham-Thornhill)

Served in six ministerial portfolios, including national defence as well as immigration, refugees and citizenship

Led initiative to welcome more than 40,000 Syrian refugees to Canada (2015 to 2016) and nominated Nelson Mandela as honorary citizen (2001)

Banking career, 1994 to 2000

Senior vice president and chief economist, Royal Bank of Canada

Academic career, 1976 to 1994

Economics professor at McGill University, the University of Quebec at Montréal, Simon Fraser University and the University of Manitoba, as well as dean of the Faculty of Arts at McGill University
