March 31, 2017 - Ottawa, Canada- Global Affairs Canada
The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:
“Canada is deeply concerned by the Venezuelan supreme court’s March 29 decision to suspend the legislative powers of the democratically elected national assembly.
“We call on the Government of Venezuela to allow the national assembly to carry out its constitutionally mandated duties and to respect the parliamentary immunity of its members.
“Canada further reaffirms that inclusive and effective dialogue is the right path to solving the political, economic and social challenges faced by the country, as was stated in the March 23, 2017, statement by Canada and 13 other members of the Organization of American States.”
