Statement by Minister Bibeau on International Day of La Francophonie

Statements

March 20, 2017 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, today issued the following statement:

“This year’s theme for International Day of La Francophonie is ‘Like it? Share it!’

“Nearly 10 million Canadians speak French. That means 10 million voices are making themselves heard across the country, overseas and on social media.

“In this digital era, when a simple hashtag can rally thousands of people on every continent, our linguistic duality and our respect for diversity are valuable assets. They help to promote the values of peace and solidarity that link Canada and the other countries in the French-speaking community.

“Among the members of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (IOF) are some of the poorest countries on earth. Canada and the IOF must combine their efforts to create a more prosperous, fairer and more equitable world—in particular by promoting women’s rights and by creating opportunities for a better future for youth.

“I would again like to congratulate the Province of Ontario, which was granted observer status by the IOF at the Madagascar Summit last November. Along with Quebec and New Brunswick, Ontario’s presence strengthens Canada’s position in the francophone cooperation arena.”
