Statements

March 13, 2017 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:

“The Commonwealth reminds us that the common values of democracy, inclusion, accountable governance, human rights and the rule of law can be shared among people of various cultures, faiths, languages, backgrounds and beliefs.

“These values are critical for peacebuilding and the development and prosperity of the more than 2 billion people in the Commonwealth, more than 60 percent of whom are under 30 years of age.

“On this day, March 13, Canada joins its 51 Commonwealth partners to celebrate the rich diversity of governments and peoples that make the Commonwealth such an important institution.”
