Quick Facts

  • Founded in 1948, the OAS is the oldest regional organization in the world and the premier political multilateral forum of the hemisphere, with 34 active member states. It is the only regional organization that includes North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean. The Organization is built on four main pillars: democracy, human rights, security and development.

  • Since becoming a full member of the OAS in 1990 after 28 years as an observer, Canada has contributed to some of the organization’s important collective achievements, such as the establishment of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, the elaboration of the Declaration on Security in the Americas and the adoption of the Social Charter of the Americas.

  • The General Assembly is the principal organ of the OAS. It gathers foreign affairs ministers of all member states on an annual basis and also holds special sessions to consider urgent matters. This year’s General Assembly will take place in Cancún, Mexico, from June 19 to 21, 2017, under the theme “Strengthening Dialogue and Concerted Action for Prosperity.”
