Canada announces support to empower young peace advocates in Middle East

July 30, 2017 - Tel Aviv, Israel - Global Affairs Canada
The Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, today announced a contribution of $168,011 to the Peres Center for Peace and Innovation to train and empower Israeli, Palestinian and other Middle Eastern and North African young leaders as peace advocates.
This contribution, made through Global Affairs Canada’s Peace and Stabilization Operations Program (PSOPs), will train 100 young leaders in citizen journalism, storytelling, the use of new media, and video and photojournalism, enabling participants to use these newly acquired skills to promote messages of peaceful coexistence online and within their networks and communities. The training will take place through online course as well as workshops in Jerusalem and Jordan.
PSOPs is at the heart of Canada’s engagement on the world stage in the areas of international peace, security and stability, and helps to address the factors that create conflicts and violence. Through PSOPs, Canada is working with allies and the international community to help local societies to forge pathways out of conflict and fragility toward peace and stability.

On August 26, 2016, the Government of Canada announced the launch of Global Affairs Canada’s new PSOPs initiative. For the 2016 to 2019 period, the program has a budget of $450 million. Through PSOPs, Canada is working with allies and partners to stop violent conflict, provide security and create space for dialogue and conflict resolution.

In the West Bank and Gaza, PSOPs aims to support the security sector, peacebuilding initiatives and efforts to help advance the peace process.
