Hurricane Maria: Canadian response and safety advice

Global Affairs Canada today issued the following statement:

“The Government of Canada is closely monitoring Hurricane Maria’s progress through the Caribbean and is responding.

“We continue to provide assistance to Canadians who may be impacted by the storm. To date, we have received 33 requests for assistance to return to Canada. Our diplomatic missions are working with local authorities, airlines and tour operators to help Canadians.

“We continue to urge Canadians in areas where there is an ‘avoid all travel’ advisory to leave by commercial means while they are still available, if it is safe to do so. They should also monitor news reports and follow the advice of local authorities.

“Canadians should contact their loved ones who may be in harm’s way to ensure that they are aware of the latest recommendations.

“Canadians requiring emergency consular assistance should contact the nearest Canadian government office or the Global Affairs Canada 24/7 Emergency Watch and Response Centre in Ottawa by collect phone call at +1 613 996 8885 or by email at sos@international.gc.ca.

“The Canadian Disaster Assessment Team has been deployed to the Caribbean region to evaluate urgent humanitarian needs, following a request from the Government of Dominica. Additionally, the Canadian Armed Forces remain in the region and are prepared to help.”
