Parliamentary Secretary to Minister of Foreign Affairs to travel to the Pacific Islands region

Matt DeCourcey, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that he will travel to Fiji and Samoa from September 4 to 8, 2017. During his visit, the Parliamentary Secretary will attend the 48th Pacific Islands Forum and related meetings in Apia, Samoa. 

Parliamentary Secretary DeCourcey will also meet with representatives of Canadian businesses operating in the region, political leaders, non-governmental organizations and representatives of multilateral agencies to discuss issues of mutual importance. He will also highlight the immense challenges the region faces with regard to climate change and the leadership role that the Pacific Islands Forum and Pacific Island countries such as Fiji are playing in addressing these challenges. Parliamentary Secretary DeCourcey will also engage on shared priorities such as women’s empowerment and sustainable development.

  • The Pacific Islands Forum is a political grouping with 18 members: Australia, the Cook Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

  • Since 1989, the Forum has held post-forum dialogues with key dialogue partners, at the ministerial level. There are currently 17 partners, including Canada. The other partners are China, Cuba, the European Union, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States.
