Statement by Minister of Foreign Affairs on United Nations Day

Statements

October 24, 2017 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:

“More than 70 years after it was founded, the United Nations remains the heart of the multilateral system created to maintain peace and build prosperity across the globe.

“The UN remains the primary organization through which the world can come together, find areas of agreement and solve problems on matters such as terrorism, the environment, contagious disease and chronic starvation, human rights, illiteracy and population displacement.

“As a founding member, Canada has actively and successfully supported UN efforts to address many of the issues confronting humanity. Our legacy includes helping to resolve the Suez crisis, fighting to end apartheid in South Africa, campaigning to ban landmines and pushing for the creation of the International Criminal Court.

“One of the most significant contributions we can now make at the UN is to strengthen and renew it. A robust and modern UN can help assure more global prosperity, peace and stability, which would be more difficult to maintain in an isolationist world.

“On this United Nations Day, Canada joins the international community to celebrate the UN’s commitment to building the better world its founders envisioned 72 years ago. We pledge to keep working within the multilateral system, through the UN and other organizations, to innovate, adapt and achieve sustainable results.”
