Foreign Affairs and Defence ministers welcome appointment of NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of National Defence, today issued the following statement on the appointment of Clare Hutchinson, a Canadian gender advocate, as the NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security:
“Canada recognizes that peace is only possible when women are fully involved in the prevention and resolution of conflict, as well as in other peace and security efforts. We welcome the appointment of Clare Hutchinson as the NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security.
“The Special Representative is the focal point of all aspects of NATO’s work on its women, peace and security agenda. Ms. Hutchinson is a champion for women’s rights and empowerment and brings to this position a wealth of experience in advancing the women, peace and security agenda at the United Nations.
“Canada commends NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in leading the efforts for the full and equal participation of women in the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts and in peacebuilding.
“Recently, Canada launched its second National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security, its defence policy Strong, Secure, Engaged, as well as the Elsie Initiative on Women in Peace Operations. As part of these long-term plans, Canada looks forward to actively working with Ms. Hutchinson, NATO and other international organizations to put women and girls at the centre of our diplomatic, security and peace efforts.”
