Canada announces funding for humanitarian and development assistance in Kenya

Canada is providing assistance to address the critical needs of refugees and vulnerable people in Kenya to help save lives and alleviate the suffering of those affected by conflict and drought.

The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, on behalf of the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, today announced that Canada will provide $15 million to support refugees and drought-affected populations in Kenya.

Alongside Filippo Grandi, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Minister Hussen made the announcement as part of his trip to Kenya as they visited the Dadaab refugee camp to witness first-hand the important work being done to support refugees. This new funding will be allocated to the World Food Programme and the UNHCR.

  • Canada’s support will provide emergency food assistance and vital protection assistance to more than 500,000 refugees who have sought safety in Kenya.

  • An estimated 704,000 drought-affected women, men and youth in Kenya’s climate-sensitive lands will benefit from today’s announcement.

  • Approximately 80% of project participants in the climate-resilience activities announced today will be women.
