Global Affairs Canada today issued the following statement on the arrests of two Reuters journalists in Myanmar:

“Canada is deeply concerned by the arrests of Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, in Myanmar and requests their immediate release.

“Respect for human rights and for freedom of the press are essential for democracy. Journalists should have the ability to report the facts and bring into the public domain current events without obstruction.

“No person should ever face intimidation in the exercise of their profession. Canada will use every opportunity to raise concerns regarding violations of freedom of expression around the world.”
