Canada’s additional funding to respond to food insecurity in sub-Saharan Africa

Backgrounder

Today, Canada announced an additional $19.8 million in humanitarian assistance to respond to the needs of the most vulnerable and to ensure that those requiring emergency assistance the most are reached.

The funds will help address the humanitarian needs of millions of people affected by conflict and food insecurity through the provision of:

  • emergency food assistance;
  • nutritious supplementary food;
  • treatment for severe and moderately acute malnutrition;
  • potable water, sanitation and hygiene support;
  • health care, including sexual and reproductive health services;
  • livelihood support;
  • emergency shelters; and
  • protection services, including for the prevention and treatment of gender-based violence.

The funding will be allocated to trusted and experienced Canadian and international partners who will help provide life-saving assistance to crisis-affected people, including the specific needs of women and children in Cameroon ($625,000), Chad ($800,000), Ethiopia ($4.75 million), Niger ($725,000), Nigeria ($5.6 million), South Sudan ($4.3 million), and Uganda ($3 million).
