Statements

December 9, 2017 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of National Defence, today issued the following statement after an attack on peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of Congo:

“Canada strongly condemns the recent attack against the UN’s Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO).

“Peacekeepers serve bravely and selflessly to help bring about peace and security for innocent people. An attack on peacekeepers is an attack on us all.

“We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the families, colleagues and friends of those killed in the brutal and unjustifiable assault, which killed over a dozen peacekeepers and soldiers and wounded many more.

“This tragic loss will not diminish our ongoing efforts with partner countries and the UN to strengthen the effectiveness of peacekeeping missions. The global community will not be intimidated by such mindless violence.”
