Updated travel advice and safety information for Canadians in Indonesia

Statements

December 1, 2017 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

Global Affairs Canada today issued the following statement:

“The Government of Canada continues to closely monitor the situation related to the Mount Agung volcano in Bali.

“Following an increase in eruptions on November 27, 2017, the volcanic activity alert remains at the highest level. An evacuation order is still in place for anyone within 10 km of the volcano.

“It remains difficult to ascertain the potential threat posed by Mount Agung. Canadians should explore options for leaving while they are available as the situation on the ground may change rapidly.

“The Denpasar International Airport in Bali is currently open but could close at any time due to the ash clouds. Flights could be cancelled or delayed. Contact your airline or tour operator to determine if the situation could affect your travel plans and monitor local media.

“Three members of the Standing Rapid Deployment Team have arrived in Bali and will be at the airport in Denpasar over the coming days, to assist Canadians in the region as required. Australians have been at this airport providing assistance to both Australians and Canadians, under the Canada-Australia Consular Services Sharing Agreement. So far, no Canadian has requested assistance to leave the island.

“In addition to monitoring our Travel Advice and Advisories, Canadian travellers should monitor the news and follow the advice of local authorities.

“Canadians in Bali should also stay in regular contact with their friends and family to inform them of their well-being. Loved ones of Canadians who are in Bali should make sure they are aware of the latest advice and recommendations.

“Currently, 546 Canadians in Bali are registered with the Registration of Canadians Abroad service. We recommend that all Canadians who are travelling abroad register through this voluntary service (see below). This allows the Government of Canada to notify travellers in case of an emergency abroad or during a natural disaster. Several email messages have been sent to Canadians who have registered for Indonesia.

“Canadians requiring emergency consular assistance in Bali should first call the Embassy of Canada in Jakarta and follow the instructions. At any time, Canadians requiring emergency consular assistance can also contact the nearest Government of Canada office or Global Affairs Canada’s 24/7 Emergency Watch and Response Centre in Ottawa by calling +1 613 996 8885 collect or by sending an email message to sos@international.gc.ca.”
