February 12, 2018 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:

“We mourn the death of Asma Jahangir, a passionate advocate for human rights in Pakistan.

“Ms. Jahangir spent years as a lawyer promoting women’s rights, defending the rule of law, and speaking up for those who had no voice. She leaves a powerful and lasting legacy in Pakistan through her contributions to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, the Women’s Action Forum, the Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan, and many other initiatives.

“On behalf of Canada, I offer my condolences to the family and friends of Ms. Jahangir and all who benefited from her tireless efforts in favour of human rights.”
