Canada encouraged by ongoing dialogue between North Korea and South Korea

Statement

September 20, 2018 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

Global Affairs Canada today issued the following statement after the conclusion of this year’s third meeting between Korean leaders, which was held this time in Pyongyang, North Korea:

“Canada is encouraged by the ongoing dialogue between North Korea and South Korea that aims at increasing stability and security on the Korean Peninsula. We welcome South Korea’s efforts to secure a renewed commitment by North Korea to denuclearize. We note North Korea’s conditional offer to dismantle its nuclear facilities at Yo‎ngbyon and call on them to allow inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency to go to Yongbyon so that they can resume the application of safeguards and verify any dismantlement that may take place.

“Canada believes that a diplomatic solution to the North Korea nuclear crisis is essential and possible. We reaffirm our support to regional and international efforts to address this pressing international security threat, including through sanctions that exert pressure on North Korea to abandon its weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs completely, verifiably and irreversibly.

“We will continue to work with South Korea and our international partners to strengthen diplomatic efforts toward a secure, prosperous and denuclearized North Korea.”
