Canada offers condolences following earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia

Global Affairs Canada today issued the following statement regarding the ongoing situation in Indonesia:

“Canada is deeply saddened by the loss of life and terrible destruction wrought by the powerful earthquake and tsunami that hit Indonesia yesterday. We offer our sincerest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died, and we hope for a swift recovery for those injured.

“Canada stands ready to assist as appropriate to help communities affected by the earthquake and tsunami.

“In addition to monitoring Global Affairs Canada’s travel advice and advisories, Canadian travellers in the region should monitor news reports and follow the advice of local authorities. While there have been no reports at this time of any Canadians being affected by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami, those requiring emergency consular assistance should contact Global Affairs Canada’s 24/7 Emergency Watch and Response Centre in Ottawa by calling collect at +1 613 996 8885 or by sending an email to sos@international.gc.ca.”
