News release

September 12, 2018 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development, will travel to Accra, Ghana, to represent Canada at the state funeral of Kofi Annan, taking place on September 13, 2018.

Over the span of his long career, including two terms as secretary-general of the United Nations, Mr. Annan worked to advance peace and development. As the chairman of the Advisory Commission on Rakhine State, he helped shed light and spur action on the grave crisis faced by the Rohingya in Myanmar. He gained international respect for his work to strengthen and reform the UN, to promote acceptance, pluralism and respect for human rights. In 2001, he and the UN were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to revitalize the UN and give priority to human rights.
